The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces is a companion to a book and study on urban plaza design by William Whyte. Whyte looks at behaviour in urban spaces in New York, San Francisco, and other major cities through vigorous filming and observation. In particular, the analysis of crowds, optimal sitting space, fountains (which people love) are really refreshing to watch. The message underlying this project is that architects don’t just design fancy buildings. Good architects and their work - like Mies and his iconic Seagram - motivates users instinctively to engage in social life.
